He holds a degree in Economics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1986), a Master's degree in Industrial and Technology Economics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1992), and a PhD in Economics from University College London (1997).
He is a Full Professor at the Institute of Economics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IE/UFRJ), a researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology in Public Policy, Strategies and Development (INCT-PPED), and a collaborating professor in the Environmental Sciences graduate programs at the State University of Mato Grosso (PPGCA-UNEMAT) and in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability in the Amazon at the Federal University of Amazonas (PPGCASA-UFAM).
He has extensive experience in teaching and research in Economics, with a focus on Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. His work focuses primarily on environmental policy, ecosystem services valuation, drivers of deforestation, economics and policy of protected areas, payment for ecosystem services, economic aspects of climate change and pollution, environmental macroeconomics, and green accounting.
He is also the coordinator of the Environment and Sustainable Development Economics Group (GEMA – IE/UFRJ).
